Clinical Experience in Counselling, Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy
I have a range of skills including counselling, psychodynamic counselling and analytic psychotherapy; the approach would be decided by initial discussion depending on your interest and need. I have worked in education and as a therapist in the NHS for twenty years with a real interest in helping clients identify the triggers to their difficulties. The aim of therapy is often to understand the often negative repeating patterns which interfere with a satisfying life in relationships and work. Most of my clients begin therapy stuck knowing life isn't working on some levels but uncertain where things go wrong. Identifying these unproductive patterns of relating, and even experiencing them within the therapy, where these issues can emerge in the safety of the session can allow new ways of moving forwards.
I have worked extensively with childhood abuse, and understand the need for many people to start to think about trusting in a relationship for the first time. I understand how daunting this feels initially but also how important this is in order to have a life with meaning and hope. Working in Secondary Mental Health Services over many years has given me a very wide ranging awareness and understanding of most issues. I also am experienced in helping people explore issues relating to sexual identity and many of my clients have been lesbian, gay or bisexual.
What to Expect during Counselling, Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy
I meet with my clients initially to consider the reason for seeking therapy. I will be interested in thinking about the way you currently view your life and the life events you consider formative. We will think about what it is you wish to change and consider the coping strategies which are currently helpful or unhelpful. As the sessions progress the way you respond in the therapy will be thought and talked about. My belief is that all sorts of life experiences can cause us to develop defensive and negative ways of relating to the world or others. These patterns will be repeated in the therapy with the opportunity to think about them as they occur and the possibility of a new resolution.Clinical Qualifications in Counselling, Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy
