Clinical Experience in Counselling
I have experience of working with clients in two general counselling practices: a charity based general practice and a University Counselling Service.
Neither of these services are specialised and as a result my previous clients have presented with a wide variety of issues. In these settings I have worked with clients aged from 21 to mid fifties and from all backgrounds, including the unemployed and doctoral academics.
Additionally I am employed as a part time school counsellor working with young people aged 11 - 18.
What to Expect during Counselling
I am a compassionate, caring counsellor that strives to 'meet' each client in their world. I am an integrative counsellor which means that I blend theory and techniques from a variety of psychotherapy schools. My integration blends the Humanistic, Relational Psychodynamic and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) schools of psychotherapy. This means that I attempt to enter your world using Humanistic skills of active listening, empathy and unconditional positive regard. I listen for patterns in your story and where appropriate I might offer these patterns back to you. If appropriate I use Relational Psychodynamic approaches to look at your early relational experiences as these can shape the way that you interact with others. Additionally, CBT techniques can be useful to identify and modify unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviour.
During sessions or email exchanges, we mainly talk or type, however subconscious material can be useful for gaining new insight, so sometimes I might invite you to draw - don't worry, you don't need to be Picasso :-), explore a dream, or take an imaginary journey. Additionally poetry, lyrics, artwork or in fact anything that moves you in some way is useful material.

Additional Information
After a successful seventeen year career in IT, I decided that it simply wasn't enough. I wasn't satisfied, so I started a journey of transformation involving deep personal reflection and soul searching. These journeys take courage and I sincerely hope that you find the courage to take your own journey and that you find the support you need to sustain it.
Good luck with whichever path you choose!
With best wishes,
Phil.
