Clinical Experience in Counselling
My experience in counselling and psychotherapy includes working with people who come from families with issues of alcohol, gambling, drugs and sexual abuse. I work with clients who have self harmed to gain some release from their emotional pain. I also work with people who have suffered emotional and physical abandonment.
What to Expect during Counselling
I am a Psychosynthesis counsellor. Psychosynthesis was once described to me as a 'pick and mix' therapy, meaning we draw from all therapies the best and most effective tools and ideas. Each therapeutic relationship is unique and we would work out together what would be the most effective way of working. One of the ways in which I work is with sub-personalities, an effective way to process issues of anger, sadness, guilt etc. We look at the part of the client who feels angry or sad and explore together why this has developed and what needs to be done to resolve the issue. If talking is not enough to resolve the problem we could then discuss what we could do to incorporate other techniques such as guided imagery, chair work or drawing.
I am also an EFT Practitioner (Emotional Freedom Techniques) a technique described as acupuncture without the needles. EFT is one of the new meridian therapies that has appeared in the last few years. First developed by R. J. Callahan PhD while working with a patient with a phobia of water. He discovered that by tapping under the patient's eye, the patient found her phobia had disappeared. Gary Craig further developed the technique and called it EFT. I find this technique very effective especially with anything that has not been worked through by talking in particular any longstanding trauma.
