Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I am a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist.
I have over thirty years of experience as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I have a wide experience in working with different presenting issues, and at the core of my work is the drive for the individuals 'good health', physically, emotionally, along with any concept of spirituality they hold. The underpinning philosophy of my work is that "people are OK", this of course includes you. Here there is a separation between 'the person' and their behaviour. In practice this allows me to see each person as an individual that is experiencing discomfort in their thinking, feeling and or behaviour.
Over the years I have (and do) see people from a wide range of cultural, racial and ethnic backgrounds who come with many various presenting issues.
I work with long term psychotherapy issues and shorter term counselling presentations. These are agreements that can be negotiated at the early appointments and reviewed as we go along.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
I am a qualified Teaching and Supervising Transactional Analyst. My other training includes, Person Centred (Rogerian), Gestalt and Psychodynamic Therapies. I integrate these modalities into an Integrative Relational Psychotherapy and Counselling process. In his book 'Transactional Analysis In Psychotherapy' (1961) Eric Berne described our psychological make up as being "like a stack of pennies", each penny representing a period of our development. During our development some of these pennies 'get bent', so under stress our stack wobbles. Short term counselling and therapy modalities help us establish ways to hold the stack steady under stress. Longer term psychotherapy is about facilitating us in finding the bent pennies so as we can straighten them, so we become 'stable under stress'.
Integrative Relational Psychotherapy includes elements of the behavioural modality that enables the person to hold their stack, while the longer term relational mode uses what happens between the client and therapist to understand and make more permanent changes in thinking, feeling and behaviour. This will include examining the sometimes hidden 'destructive self beliefs' and understanding how they came about so as change can be made to them.
Clinical Qualifications in Counselling and Psychotherapy
My first training in counselling was as a Youth and Community Worker, this was followed by specialised training in 'Counselling in Formal and Informal Settings'. Some years later I commenced training at The Metanoia Institute in Transactional Analysis and Gestalt psychotherapy. Over years I received training in psychodrama, bodywork and then a specialised course in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for qualified Humanistic practitioners. I continue ongoing professional development and undertake clinical supervision for my work.
