Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychology
I have worked in a number of health care settings, providing counselling and psychotherapy to diverse groups of clients. I have also been in private practice for a number of years, specialising in relational difficulties, identity issues and trauma work. I have had significant experience of both short term and long term work, and I can provide both types of therapy.
My main theoretical approach is existential-phenomenological, although I use elements of psychodynamic and humanistic approaches in my work. I have always chosen to work in an integrative fashion, incorporating different therapeutic approaches in my work in an effort to tailor my professional knowledge to the individual’s needs.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychology
Facing Life and making it meaningful.Facing life, by definition means facing problems and difficulties. Problems and difficulties can get people stuck into viewing them as inescapable. As a result people might experience less satisfaction in life. Sometimes, drawn by the currents of our everyday routines, we forget how important it is to provide ourselves with the time necessary to reflect on how we would like to live our lives, overcome feelings of stuckness and create new meaning in our lives.
Is this type of therapy for me?
Existential counselling and psychotherapy does not view everyday problems and difficulties as pathological. Rather, it believes that each individual is distinct and the way people approach life is as unique as their experiences. Existential counselling and psychotherapy will not provide instant solutions that may have no relevance to the person’s situation. Rather, it will help the person understand how problems and difficulties emerge and help the person find their own solutions. The choice is yours!
What will I get from this process?
The task of existential counselling and psychotherapy is to help the individual clarify and understand their way of living. Moving away from how things 'should be', you will explore – with the help of the therapist – new possibilities, new ways of living. Facing your life matters and exploring alternatives in your problems and difficulties is essential to become more able to live your life to the fullest. Speaking to someone in a safe, confidential place provides the basis for these new possibilities to unfold.

Additional Information
In our first meeting, we will discuss together the nature of your difficulties and what you wish to get out of your time in therapy. I usually suggest a set of twelve sessions to start with, during which you may decide this time was enough for you. Equally, I might suggest that more time is necessary. You can stop having therapy at any point; I only request a couple of weeks’ notice, as an opportunity to summarise our work and say goodbye to each other.
