Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
My clinical experience spans a range of issues facing individuals, couples and families. I work mainly in the setting of private practice in Farnham, but also provide Employee Assistance Programme counselling. My expertise is to work with people who are looking to explore their life experiences, work on unresolved issues that concern and restrict their lives, or to enhance relationships with partners, family and friends. Specific areas could include early life experiences, current trauma, loss, bereavement, depression, conflict within the family or at work. I work to support clients in their search for new ways of relating, resolving difficulties that cause anxiety and fear and establishing healthy ways of living that allow clients to thrive.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
I work with the presenting issue, listening to my clients and supporting their search for insight into what is troubling them. I work with the material presented and support clients to develop their awareness of how they are functioning in their lives, valuing strengths and resilience as much as problem areas. In order to move forward in a practical way I encourage clients to experiment with new thoughts and behaviours and try them out in the safety of the therapy room.My theoretical base is Humanistic, which is a belief in the intrinsic capacity of human beings for growth and developing to their full potential. This means the work of therapy is to uncover the blockages to healthy ways of being and to establish new and more supportive coping mechanisms. A Gestalt approach includes developing a relevant awareness of the past, but focusing this through current day to day experiences, and looking to establish healthy new behaviours which support growth. My fundamental stance is empathy, support and non judgemental compassion for the difficulties facing clients.
After an initial assessment session with individuals or couples I agree the way the work will proceed with the client. We discuss the initial focus for the work, the likely duration, and the review processes. The length of the therapy varies from brief (six weeks) to long term.
I also run Personal Development groups for those wanting to explore their developmental issues in a group setting and quarterly Family Constellation Workshops with groups of people interested in exploring with others the transgenerational issues that are blocking love from flowing within their families. This approach is based on the work of Hellinger, which developed from Family Therapy Systemic approaches.
