Clinical Experience in Psychotherapy

I have been working as an individual and group therapist for over twenty years. I have experience of working with people with a variety of emotional, relationship and identity problems. As a psychotherapist I have extensive experience of providing both short term and long term therapy.

What to Expect during Psychotherapy

The first session is a chance for us to meet, for you to tell me what has brought you to therapy and for me to let you know how I work. We can then decide if we feel we can work together (with no obligation to continue).

I use an integrative approach to counselling and psychotherapy drawing from a variety of interests, training and experience. The main theoretical grounding for my work is Transactional Analysis (TA). This approach includes developing a therapy contract where the client is encouraged to explore and name what they want from therapy and together the client and the psychotherapist work towards these aims in a collaborative way.

For example, the contract might be a desire to process a significant loss, a greater understanding of the self through making connections with the past or help in improving life through making healthy choices. This can include getting support to understand and change unhealthy behaviour patterns and to get to know and accept who you truly are. Depending on the client's needs the therapy can range from short term more solution focused counselling, drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) aspects of my training, to long term psychodynamic orientated therapy.

I work with an underlying philosophy that people are essentially ok and that everyone has value, worth and dignity. In therapy I see there is a focus on three areas: the influences of the past, understanding and dealing with current life experiences and what is happening between us as a way of understanding other relationships. I see people weekly and the length of therapy depends very much on the client and their needs.

Clinical Qualifications in Psychotherapy

  • Post Graduate Certificate Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) - Metanoia Institute (MET) London (UK) 2009
  • UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist - Transactional Analysis (TA) Psychotherapist since 2008
  • MSc Transactional Analysis (TA) Psychotherapy - Middlesex University (UK) 2008

I am committed to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Psychotherapy. I abide by the Code of Ethics of the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the Code of Ethics of the Metanoia Institute (MET) London.

Additional Information

As well as practicing as a psychotherapist I am also a qualified dramatherapist with over twenty years extensive experience working with individuals and groups. From this training, and if the client is interested, I am experienced in working with story, metaphor and the exploration of dreams. I am also a supervisor offering clinical supervision to arts therapists.
