Clinical Experience in Counselling

I am experienced counsellor and therapist who has helped many people make changes in various aspects of their lives over the past fifteen years. With a background in commerce, having worked in the City prior to training as a therapist, I am very experienced in helping people manage stress, anxiety and the work/life balance. I am a Accredited Counsellor with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to its Code of Ethics and Practice. I am an Associate Member of Employee Assistance Providers of Counselling and Psychotherapy (EAPs) and I am a Registered Practitioner within the private healthcare system. I have teaching experience as a Tutor in counselling to Advanced Diploma level at Oaklands College, St Albans and Barnfield College, Luton (2003 - 2007). I also work as a trainer in both private and voluntary sectors. I am a BACP Accredited Supervisor of Counsellors and have a clinical supervision practice where I offer support and consultation to trainees and experienced therapists. I am committed to maintaining my professional development and attend regular further training.

What to Expect during Counselling

My aim is to offer a supportive and non-judgmental setting in which clients can feel free to express their thoughts and feelings. I offer a warm and genuine approach, respecting individual values and personal choice.

At our first meeting we would discuss how counselling or therapy might be of benefit. Some clients chose a brief solution-focussed approach of up to 6 sessions, others prefer to continue on a longer term basis. The client can chose to end counselling at any time.

I work in an Integrative way, drawing on specific models of counselling in order to work with people as unique individuals. I offer a warm, non-judgmental humanistic approach with the possible integration of cognitive and behavioural work if clients want to look at a specific behaviour such as an eating disorder or problem drinking. This would involve setting goals and embarking on understanding and changing the particular behaviour. These two approaches are underpinned by psychoanalytic thinking and acknowledgment of past events and relationships, and unconscious processes.

I aim to provide a safe and secure environment where difficulties can be talked about in a way not possible with family or friends. I do not give advice, nor do I judge what clients say. My aim is to facilitate people to make choices, set and achieve goals, and gain awareness of what might be holding them back or getting in the way of a more effective way of dealing with problems.

Gaining self-awareness - becoming more aware of thoughts and feelings which might have been blocked off - is an important aspect of the process. By gaining an understanding of how past events affect our present lives and how old patterns of behaviour are repeated, and exploring them in confidence can help us find a more effective way of dealing with our problems.

All material discussed with clients in counselling sessions is entirely confidential. I work within the BACP Ethical Framework and receive independent supervision on a regular basis.

Clinical Qualifications in Counselling
