I am a specialist in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which often underlies other expressions of distress. Early fractures to Self in relationship are also a specialism and at the other end of the spectrum, I work with people in senior and executive positions in the professions and industry, carrying heavy responsibility without the personal and professional support they need and deserve.I have expertise and enjoyment working with couples, I have real understanding and skill with anyone suffering from bi-polar disorder. I work relationally, creatively and strategically.
I have been a trainer of psychotherapists and coaches and supervisors. I have been a psychotherapist for thirty years and I am the Director of the Iron Mill Institute in Exeter and Elliot-Griffiths Coaching Consultancy and have been a Consultant Psychotherapist to G.P's and others in the Health service through the Occupational Health System in the South West.
How I Work
I am a good diagnostician so will spend the first session with the client deciding together what is at the core of the problem that has brought them to me and what is needed to address this or these. We then decide whether it is Psychotherapy, Counselling or Coaching that is needed and work relationally and contractually so that both are involved equally in the process. We have the opportunity to deal with all kinds of issues and emotions and can laugh too when needed. I consider when people come to me they have already suffered enough, so my aim is to get them back on their feet as fast as possible and then analyse later, except in cases where there are early indications of trauma and dissociation when I take it slowly and gently, making sure the client is aware of my thinking throughout.I work collaboratively, so the subtleties of relationship are paramount.
I believe there are always two therapists in the room, the client and the practitioner.
I work from a range of perspectives being multi-lingual in the profession and I do not believe one size fits all.
Clinical Training in Counselling, Psychotherapy
I have trained in a number of modalities to a very high level having spent eight years training in relational and integrative Transactional Analysis (TA), two further years in Integrative Psychotherapy, had Jungian Analysis and also trained in Eriksonian and other frameworks. I am a practicing artist, so use creative interventions widely. I am a management consultant and trained supervisor so will think outside of the box and take context and roles into consideration.I am originally trained in Psychology, Anthropology and Sociology.
I have also been trained in Mediation.
