Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I have been providing counselling and psychotherapy in private practice in London since 1999. Anxiety, stress and relationship difficulties are among the urgent concerns that people bring to me, and I also offer help with deeper and wider projects of personal growth, such as finding a new direction in life or healing an old trauma.
Business and career issues are a key area of my therapy work, in which I draw on my ten years' experience as a management consultant and coach. I also work extensively with issues of cultural and personal identity.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
I see psychotherapy as a joint project aimed at helping the client become wiser, stronger and freer. I am an integrative psychotherapist, which means that I try to achieve this by combining ideas and techniques from some existing approaches (psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioural) with those of my own. Most clients seek my help because they are in pain or turmoil, and their first priority is to feel better and to regain their balance. This can often be achieved in half a dozen sessions or so. For some people, a confidential environment, an empathetic listener, a focused thinking process, and some practical coping skills are therapeutic enough. If this is what you need, then I am happy to work with you in this time-limited, solution-focused way.
However, if your pain and turmoil are of the kind that keeps coming back or has been with you for a long time, then it may be better to take the bull by the horns and look deeper. Although our personalities change throughout our lifetime, childhood experiences shape us more profoundly than we like to admit. Retracing key events of our personal history and understanding how and why we became who we are today usually opens up new choices in life. Old habits of thinking, feeling and acting may still linger, but they will be easier to change (if this is what you decide to do), and I can offer you some tools to help with that.
In my view, the client and therapist are equal partners. We will both use the initial session to decide whether we are the right match, and will regularly review our goals and progress. I will probe into your thinking and you are welcome to challenge mine. My skills and personality are your resources to pick and choose from, and my interpretations are not “diagnoses” but working hypotheses for us to explore or reject.
Like all major change, therapy takes time, but the good news is that you are the one doing the work, so you can speed it up by reflecting on the issues between sessions and later actively trying out new ways of being. Many of my clients leave after resolving a particular issue, and come back for another piece of work in a few months or even years - not because they are still "unsorted", but because therapy is a great way to learn and grow.
