Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I have worked in a variety of clinical posts providing counselling and psychotherapy; these settings offer help with drug and alcohol misuse, adult learning difficulties, career planning and developing. I have a deep knowledge of issues concerning mid-life, sexuality, marriage and relationships, self-esteem and resourcing. I offer life-review therapy and help with defining personality strengths and weaknesses. I work with trauma, abuse and violence issues.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
I am a trained Existential Psychotherapist. This means that I approach psychotherapy through a philosophical stand-point. Far from being an intellectual or abstract approach, Existential Psychotherapy examines the individual in his/her context and in relation to others and to the surrounding world.I draw attention to my clients’ understanding of their own philosophy of life. I analyze and discuss with them what they wish to retain and what they wish to change in order to identify and take advantage of new opportunities and increase the quality of life.
Existential Psychotherapy can be time-limited or open-ended. It can be cost-effective and solution focused. It involves creating an understanding of clients’ basic beliefs and inherited assumptions and it helps clients to make choices and to re-define their world-view in order to achieve their goals and aspirations.
I integrate different techniques within my Existential orientation, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT ), Attachment Therapy, Focusing and Mindfulness, just to name a few.
Life Review Therapy
We usually take for granted that a car needs a yearly service and MOT and a Company has to file accounts and hold an AGM. Yet people rarely think of setting aside a little time to review their own life situation, and assess their achievements or draw plans for the future.
I invite my clients to take advantage of Short-Term Existential Psychotherapy in order to assess, in a professional and confidential way, how things are going and, better still, how they could be improved. This not only helps identify areas that may need to be clarified and developed, but also highlights achievements and success and offers an opportunity for corroborating awareness of one’s strengths.
Although the word therapy implies the idea of a cure, I feel that there is much more than that within the Existential Psychotherapy discipline. Talking with a professional practitioner facilitates understanding and develops ideas and motivation. It alleviates hardship and suffering and it brings meaning into everyday life.
I offer Life Review Therapy as cost-effective, short term modules of six sessions.
