Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I provide counselling and psychotherapy in Rugeley, Staffordshire where I run a private practice. In addition to general counselling or psychotherapy, I offer relationship building to couples preparing for marriage. Many clients come to me for a Life Style Assessment because they are searching for greater personal development or a different direction in life. I specialise in relaxation techniques, anxiety and anger management. Many clients benefit from learning new assertiveness skills and confidence building.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

As an Adlerian Counsellor, the relationship between the client and myself is very important. Therapy is very much a journeying together. For me our past will help us to understand our current behaviour. I help people to change negative and useless behaviour to a more positive and useful attitude to life, where they can feel in control of themselves, confident and able to reach out to others. I help clients to rediscover their strengths, to take responsibility for a different ways of thinking, feeling and behaving.

With couples, we look together at what brought them together, help each to understand the other's differences and needs. The couple will look at how to develop useful communication skills. They begin to understand that each partner is also an individual, who needs space and time for self. To allow that to happen, we need to trust each other and be able to communicate our needs and feelings. That creates a positive relationship where couples can give each other space and enjoy being together.

Family counselling is a time where a family gets together because there is a problem they don't seem to be able to solve. Often there is a scapegoat, the one who causes all the trouble. Together we look at where the family can make some changes in their being together. In family counselling, each member of the family has the same right to speak, all are equal because they all share in the dysfunction of family life. Therefore, in family counselling we work on taking responsibility for self and for the family. We look at the strengths that each has to offer.

Respecting each other as equal human beings can be difficult to accept in some families. We look at communication and listening skills, at how to step back from disagreements or how to handle them more assertively. We look at how to plan fun days out and how everyone can take part in that organising, even a three year old will have some contribution to make. We look at family meetings, where any disagreement or unhappy incident can be discussed, where everyone takes on a responsibility for the running of family life and where outings and holidays can be planned.

I offer brief counseling, where people may come for anything between three to six sessions. It is amazing what can be achieved in such short time. The time limit helps the majority of clients to be very focused on what they want to change and I am full of admiration for the hard work they are prepared to put in to get where they want to be.
