Clinical Experience in Psychotherapy
I am UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist and a British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Accredited Psychotherapist. I have over a decade of experience in providing counselling and psychotherapy to people with a wide range of issues. This includes ten years of a private counselling and psychotherapy practice in Chichester, and six years working for an NHS Primary Care Team (PCT) where I work in conjunction with GPs, Psychiatrists, Community Mental Health Teams (CMHT) and other Health Professionals. As well as self referrals, I also work with EAP and private health insurance referrals.
What to Expect during Psychotherapy
Initially, during what is often called an assessment session we will discuss your reason for starting therapy and seek to understand what you are hoping to gain from the experience. Here will be an opportunity for you to ask questions about my work and anything else you feel important in making your decision to work with me. From there we will make a 'contract', a Transactional Analysis term for defining the work you wish to complete in order to resolve what has been concerning you.Therapy is an opportunity for you to focus on the nature of your problem. Occasionally you may come to feel upset, and this can be a natural part of your journey. Therefore it’s important that you know you are in charge of your work, exploring in your time and at your own pace. You will not be forced to confront something you do not wish to.
It is important that you feel comfortable working with me, and that I am confident that I can offer you the most appropriate support that you need. Therefore, in our initial session together, we would explore both your needs and my professional capacity to meet them. You can then decide, either at that session or at a later date, whether or not you wish to continue therapy with me.
Rarely, we may discover your needs would be better met by a different therapist or therapeutic approach. Should this be the case, I will make every effort to recommend or refer you to an alternative person or therapy source.
Just as everyone is individual, so our experience and need for therapy will vary. Issues that reveal themselves to be more complex or deeper can sometimes necessitate a more in-depth and possibly longer commitment. Likewise, issues that have a recent history could be addressed over a shorter period of time. I offer this as a guideline. In our work together we would come to understand your needs, and together make plans accordingly.
If what you have read so far is of interest to you, I invite you to get in touch, make an appointment and find out more.
Confidentiality is at the heart of therapy. There are very few exceptions to this rule, and these would be explained to you at the start of our work together.
My work is respectful of difference, be that of origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, politics, culture and nationality.
Psychotherapy and counselling are terms which are often used interchangeably. Therapist is a term often used by both counsellors and psychotherapists, and as such can be confusing.
Psychotherapy is a confidential talking process between a client and a psychotherapist. It offers a professional, secure environment to reflect on and explore experiences and feelings that you may be struggling with. This is usually, though not always, exploratory and thus longer-term work in nature, and is conducted with a psychotherapist. With time you have options to
explore deeper parts of yourself, with the aim of understanding yourself, and how you relate to others and the world. This can include understanding some unconscious processes.
Counselling is often shorter-term, goal-orientated work. With a counsellor or psychotherapist, you look at a specific issue or event, with the aim of both understanding and making changes.
