Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I am a qualified Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist and Play Specialist who is committed to providing a confidential and non judgmental counselling and psychotherapy service in a safe, warm and welcoming environment. I provide short and long term therapy to both adults and children. My overall aim in therapy is to provide an opportunity for clients to work through inner conflicts, challenges, unresolved issues and fears that in return facilitate new insight and therefore improves recovery. I am also able to provide play therapy using a variety of creative materials. I have experience working with trauma related issues. Having trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), I specialise in traumatic incidents or trauma related issue. I also work for Bupa as a counsellor and manage high risk clients.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling and psychotherapy means different things to different people. The overall aim of counselling is to provide a safe, non-judgemental environment that gives individuals the opportunity to explore and examine their problematic situation which creates emotional disturbances or challenges. The therapeutic relationship between the therapist and client permits the opportunity to work through these issues, and allow the individual to gain insight and understanding of their situation that can help improve recovery process and well-being.

Qualified as an Integrative Counsellor I offer a Humanistic, Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioural (CBT), and Multicultural approach to my client work. It is important to point out that each individual is unique therefore will be treated accordingly. Therefore each individual’s therapeutic plan will be tailored to suit individual needs.

When working with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), phobias, performance anxiety, anxiety and depression I tend to work in an eclectic manner, using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and a Humanistic approach.

Having been trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) I tend to apply EMDR as a tool within the theoretical approach. This approach is effective when working with individuals who have experienced traumatic incidents, such as, road traffic accidents, war, violent attack, persistent domestic violence, physical/sexual abuse, sudden death etc.

When people are traumatised, they tend to experience overwhelming emotions that the brain at times struggles to comprehend and therefore is unable to process information as it usually does. Disturbing experiences can become frozen and stored in the brain in the original footage. However, this footage can be replayed back in nightmares, flashbacks and intrusive memories. People who experience trauma can also experience high anxiety levels and panic attacks, as such memories have a lasting negative effect on the way people see themselves, the World and other people.

Clinical Qualifications in Counselling and Psychotherapy

  • British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Accredited (MBACP Accred) Counsellor and Psychotherapist since 2010
  • MSc Therapeutic Counselling

I am committed to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I abide by the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Additional Information

It is good to talk. The notion that counselling and psychotherapy is for severely disturbed individuals is a myth. Remember insight into a situation can only improve symptom reduction.
