Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I have been involved in counselling for eleven years by way of private practice, community and student sectors. I am predominantly a Person Centred Counsellor but have attended training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic approaches. I have worked at a sixth form centre, at Barnet Community Counselling and as a private practitioner in London.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
A non judgemental space to explore feelings, emotions and events and that may have contributed to your problems and issues. You can also expect greater understanding, personal changes and often a greater harmony and self acceptance. Clients report greater clarity and options becoming viable to them as they progress through therapy. Many people simply never have the time to talk through the issues which overwhelm them and in turn never experience being actively listened to in our frequently busy lives. This has an impact by way of relationship issues for many of us.
In addition increasingly we find it difficult to find any space to think - with phones, texts, email, ipods, Blackberrys all creating a background of noise.
To move on we need to understand where we are currently, this can be painful but is generally a worthwhile venture.
Emotions and feelings get frozen and in a sense get 'locked in a box' - we dare not open the box and may use all sorts of damaging coping mechanisms. We may resort to addictions, self soothers, alcohol, smoking, relationships may flounder or we simply do not understand what is happening to us, hence we may get very angry.
Counselling can help this process. I am particularly interested in how mental distress can get played out in bodily symptoms which many people report.
