Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I have over three years clinical experience working with clients in various organisational settings, as well as in private practice. These include a GP surgery, Nottingham City Council employee assistance programme and the charity Nottingham Counselling Service. I have worked with individuals age fifteen to sixty five for time limited periods of six weeks up to two years years, as well as on an open ended basis. I also have a personal interest in working with people affected by autistic spectrum disorders, such as Aspergers Syndrome and their partners, siblings and parents.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

I am a humanistic person centred practitioner which means my personal approach to therapy is rooted in the belief that we all have within in us the potential to be the best that we can be. Unfortunately, this potential is often compromised by the situations and environment in which we find ourselves. Unexpected trauma or experiences in our past, in particular during our childhood, may continue to influence our behaviour in the present. As a result, we may find ourselves subconsciously repeating familiar patterns in relationships or perpetuating an outdated belief about ourselves. It can be difficult to recognise the choices we have to be different in the future. We may find ourselves "stuck" and unable to move forward in the way in which we'd like.

I believe counselling facilitates the discovery of "new ways of being", whilst providing emotional support should you choose to implement them. It offers an opportunity to talk in confidence to someone who has been professionally trained to listen. By creating an atmosphere of trust, respect and understanding, you may feel able to develop greater insight into the issues that are important to you whilst exploring different ways of coping with them. As your counsellor, I will not judge or influence your decisions in any way.

Additional Information

The decision to come to counselling is a big commitment in time, money and emotion. It is important to me that you feel as fully informed and comfortable as possible in making that decision. The first appointment is an opportunity for you to get a sense of what it might be like to work with me and although this session is subject to the usual fee, you are under no obligation to continue.
