Clinical Experience in Counselling
I have extensive experience of working with individuals experiencing a wide range of difficulties. In addition to my private counselling practice, I work as a Counselling Manager and Clinical Supervisor for a charity supporting young people and their families.
What to Expect during Counselling
There are times in most people's lives when they experience emotionally painful events or have unwanted feelings from which there seem to be no escape. Sometimes the cause is clear: a difficult relationship, a bereavement or an illness. Sometimes however we feel our lives have become intolerable, we are repeating the same old difficulties time and time again or we just feel stuck. The cause of these feelings can seem to be inexplicable. My aim as a Counsellor is to help people to know and accept themselves, and to find their own meanings and ways through their questions and difficulties.Counselling is not an advice service. What it does is to help us understand what is going on in our lives. Once things are clarified, people often experience great relief and most importantly are in a position to take charge of their lives. Therapy also helps people come to terms with past events and unexpected changes in their lives. Our work together is a process of personal development within a safe and confidential relationship.
My approach is Integrative, which means that I use elements from Psychodynamic theory, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Person Centred thinking in my practice. My primary aim is to create a safe and confidential therapeutic relationship, within which together we can explore your life and experiences.
The first session is an opportunity to discuss your current situation and what you want and hope to gain from counselling and to ask me some questions. I will take some time to talk to you about how counselling works and the practicalities of this. If we decide not to work together, I might be able to suggest a colleague or an organisation more suited to your needs. If we decide to work together, we might agree to work on an ongoing long term basis or for a fixed number of sessions.
Confidentiality and trust are important aspects of therapy. All details relating to personal identity and shared information remain strictly confidential. I am bound by the Ethics of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) in this regard.
