Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I offer a confidential counselling service where clients can talk through their feelings and explore their options. I work together with the client to support them to find a solution and empower them to make the right choices. I have experience using psychotherapy and counselling with individuals and couples, as well as some group work with people suffering from phobias and OCD. I also work as a telephone counsellor and face to face affiliate for an EAP (employee assistance programme) supporting clients from a number of organisations. I offer a psychotherapy service where together we would aim to understand the client's sense of self and their repeated patterns of feeling, thinking and behaviour (for example, some people may ask themselves why they always end up in destructive relationships). The aim would be to broaden the client's awareness of self and others and transform their negative patterns into positive ones. As a Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) I am bound by its Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

I use a Humanistic approach to counselling and psychotherapy, specifically working with Transactional Analysis. Transactional Analysis (TA) is also an integrative approach, built on the premise that we are all born OK and it is our environment that shapes us, we have the capacity to think and therefore to change if we want to. TA was founded by Eric Berne, a renowned psychiatrist, whose aim was to make the language of psychotherapy easily accessible to the client, creating an equal relationship between the client and the practitioner.

The theory to TA’s approach is that our personalities are made up of three ego states: the Parent, Adult and Child. The Parent represents feelings, thoughts and behaviours we have internalised from our parents or carers. The Adult represents feelings, thoughts and behaviours autonomously used to rationalise the here and now reality, almost like a computer. The Child represents feelings, thoughts and behaviours stemming from our past experiences which return within us in the present, usually out of awareness.

Another part of the theory is that at a very early age we decide upon an unconscious life plan called a script which is influenced by our upbringing. Sometimes our script can lead to an unhealthy life style, including the repetition of non beneficial or destructive behaviours, and the aim of therapy is to assist a person to come out of script through self awareness and choice of a healthier way to live.

I use TA to look at people’s social interactions as well as their feelings, behaviour and ways of thinking.
