I am an experienced qualified counsellor who holds a Diploma in Counselling and I have been listening to clients since 2000.My approach to counselling is Humanistic. This makes our sessions very client centred. I have also had training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which can provide some useful tools where appropriate.
Our sessions are confidential within the Code of Ethics and Practice for Counsellors of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
I am available at pleasant locations in both Bristol and Weston-super-Mare, where I see clients face to face. In addition, I am experienced in telephone counselling for individuals if this is a more convenient way of working for you.
If there is a particular problem that is having a negative impact on a client's every day life, we would usually work with that first and then make a decision whether to deal with any underlying reason behind the problem. In this way, it is the client's decision whether the work is done over a brief time in a solution focused way or whether longer term work is more suitable for their needs.
How I Work
My counselling diploma course was primarily Humanistic which ensures I always put the client at the centre of everything I do. Consequently the pace at which we work is driven by you as client. We are usually a product of our life experiences and sometimes we are unable to move forward because we have not come to terms with past events. It is entirely your own decision whether we work in a brief solution focused way or if you would prefer a more open ended way of working. We would discuss your specific needs during our assessment session so that you would be clear about what to expect from counselling with me.
Depending on your needs, our work together may include CBT which can help by changing the way we think about things. We might also discuss the thoughts behind the theory of Transactional Analysis (TA) if it is appropriate. Gestalt counselling encourages us to stay in the 'here and now' and that can be a useful starting point for some.
The key to the way I work with clients is you, the client. Counselling sessions are as individual as you are.
Clinical Training in Counselling
The Humanistic Counselling Diploma I studied was modular and included the additional approaches CBT, Gestalt, and TA.I continue to volunteer for a major UK charity who provided me with specific training for work with bereavement clients.
In addition, I undertook training from another major UK charity for both telephone and email counselling.
Other specific training I have undertaken includes counselling for survivors of sexual and other types of abuse, as well as counselling for those with depression and anxiety.
