Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I have been counselling since 1985, following completion of a post graduate diploma in counselling. Based on the Surrey and Hampshire borders close to Guildford, Woking, Farnham and Aldershot, my service is totally confidential, provided in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere and from an impartial and non-judgemental standpoint. I work positively with clients regardless of age, gender, disability, cultural and religious background or sexual preference. Prompt appointments are offered at times to suit you, including evenings and Saturday mornings.
I help individuals and couples who want to take more control over their lives and need some help and support in order to do so. I can assist with a variety of issues resulting in long term positive changes including relationship problems, depression and lack of motivation, addictions and phobias, abuse and post traumatic stress.
Having an impartial, skilled professional helps release emotional frustration and clear the turmoil of thoughts; enabling a client to discover inner resources, consider new perspectives and take control over situations that once seemed overwhelming or insurmountable.
With counsellor as facilitator, couples can be helped to talk about their feelings honestly. Conflict, and the resulting frustration and difficulties can be brought into the open and discussed rationally. The initial session will provide the opportunity for issues and concerns to be raised and an agreed plan for future sessions formulated. This may involve clients being seen individually as well as together although such decisions will always be openly discussed with both partners.
I have extensive experience in comprehensive schools in Inner London and Hampshire; counselling young people and parents in a variety of contexts including behavioural issues which cause conflict at home, school or both.
My clients leave counselling sessions with a much greater understanding of their own needs and with strategies that enable them to cope with future challenges. Counselling is sometimes portrayed as a long drawn out process but often positive changes can be brought about quickly and many clients report a positive impact after just one session.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
I have an eclectic approach to counselling drawing upon successful methods from many models of psychotherapy and combining a person centred approach with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). CBT helps you to change how you think (Cognitive) and what you do (Behaviour). It establishes a focused approach that leads to lasting change and centres on the "here and now" problems and difficulties. Instead of concentrating on the causes of your distress or symptoms in the past, it looks for ways to improve your state of mind now.I also subscribe to the Human Givens approach focusing on clients' needs taking on board new understanding of brain science and helping them to recognise and use their own resources more effectively.
I can offer an email and telephone service to clients as an alternative or addition to face to face counselling.
Clinical Qualifications in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I completed a post graduate diploma in counselling in 1985 and have been actively involved in counselling couples and individuals, pupils and students and parents and families ever since.
I now run a full time counselling practice and prior to this was a Head of Year in secondary schools in Hampshire and North London. I have a Bachelor of Education degree that involved research into the causes and effects of stress and a Masters degree that focused on aspects of cognitive development, affects on behaviour and research into the affects of personal recording on self-esteem and personal development. During this time, I also provided counselling training to teachers and health professionals.
Attending numerous workshops and seminars including courses in couple counselling, anxiety and depression has ensured my knowledge and practice remains up to date and relevant.
Further recent training in telephone and online counselling provided by Kate Anthony President of the ISMHO.
