Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

Hello. My name is Terence Lawton. I'm a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist - Existential Psychotherapist. My private Counselling and Psychotherapy consulting room is in Putney, London.

A Psychotherapist since January 2004, I have 9 years of experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I work with Individuals and Couples. I have academic and clinical research experience in HIV and AIDS.

As well as being a Psychotherapist in private practice in Putney, London, I have experience as a Charity Psychotherapist.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

After an initial appointment in Putney, London, there is no obligation to continue if you prefer not to. As Client and Therapist, we may utilise the private environment to clarify the current or unresolved past challenges for which you are considering Counselling or Psychotherapy. I will discuss confidentiality with you and address any questions you may have. We can see how well we work together. You and I will then be able to decide if my Counselling and Psychotherapy practice is right for you.

The aim of my Counselling and Psychotherapy practice is to tailor therapy to you and your needs. To get the most from Counselling and Psychotherapy you will need to be able to work collaboratively.

As a UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist - Existential Psychotherapist, I am trained and experienced in using Dasein Therapy, Existential Therapy, Meditation Therapy, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Personal Construct Therapy and Phenomenological Therapy to assist people to live more fully.

Dasein Therapy

Dasein Therapy is based on the work of the philosopher Martin Heidegger. "Dasein", meaning "being there", is the term Heidegger used to describe what it is to be human. Dasein Therapy involves a deep and powerful exploration of personal identity, spirituality and relationships. Generally 25 to 200 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.

Existential Therapy

This is a philosophically based approach presupposing that conflict, pain and unhappiness result from confrontation with existential "givens" such as anxiety, loss, mortality, guilt, and isolation. It focuses on choice and possibility, aiming to replace hopelessness, powerlessness and "stuckness" with responsibility, awareness, freedom, and change. Generally 12 to 50 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.

Meditation Therapy

Meditation Therapy uses non-dogmatic and non-religious forms of contemplation and reflection. It aims to increase awareness of thought processes and clarify how unwelcome distractions, unwanted worries, and disturbing ideas or feelings arise and how they can be reduced. Generally 6 to 12 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)

MBCT combines meditative practice with cognitive techniques. It focuses on moment-to-moment changes in the mind and body. By becoming aware of the present rather than focusing on past distress or rehearsing future problems it aims to change negative beliefs and behaviours. Generally 16 to 24 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)

NLP explores the connection between thought, language, belief and behaviour. It aims to challenge established patterns of thinking and acting and provide specific techniques and skills designed to increase focus, improve self esteem, open up choice and possibility and "recode" unwanted assumptions and behaviours. Generally 1 to 12 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.

Personal Construct Therapy

Personal Construct Therapy looks at how you 'create' yourself and your world with constructs, which are inherited or generated as you progressed through life. The aim is to explore and challenge these constructs, in order to develop new ideas and new behaviours more in keeping with your goals. Generally 12 to 100 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.

Phenomenological Therapy

Phenomenological Therapy acknowledges that you see the world in your own way and that fulfilling your potential is not a matter of fitting in but of honouring your own uniqueness. This process involves a deep exploration of how you experience, feel and engage with your world. Generally 12 to 100 sessions: depends on issue and other factors.

  • UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered Psychotherapist - Existential Psychotherapist since 2007
