Clinical Experience in Counselling

I have provided counselling and telephone counselling to individual clients in the Cambridge area for fourteen years. I have experience of working privately, as well as in the NHS. I also have considerable experience of working with clients who have substance misuse issues as I worked in an agency providing counselling to this client group and also to their partners and/or families. For several years, I was also a bereavement counsellor with Cruse Bereavement Care.

How I Work

My main objective is to create a safe, confidential and empathetic space for my client so that he/she can explore whatever they want to bring, in a secure and reliable environment. I am very experienced in both long-term and short-term work.

My principal training was as a psychodynamic counsellor. This means looking at the issues which clients bring and exploring whether there is a link between them and experiences in the client's past. This enables clients to understand, for example, why their relationships may follow certain patterns, or why they respond to certain people or situations in a particular way. This understanding plays a crucial part in enabling clients to move forward with their lives.

I have also done some training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and I incorporate many CBT techniques into my work with clients, especially into work with anxiety, phobias, compulsive behaviour etc, where a step-by-step approach to reducing the avoidance of anxiety-provoking situations is very effective.

Clinical Training in Counselling

My core training was as a psychodynamic counsellor. This involved studying the work of Freud and Jung, as well as many other key psychoanalysts such as Melanie Klein and Winnicott. Fundamental to the training was the study of emotional development from infancy to adulthood whereby I acquired a sound knowledge of the impact of both good and bad experiences on the developing child and also on adults. Understanding the role which our unconscious minds play in our lives also plays a vital part in understanding our own thoughts, dreams, feelings and behaviour.

I also trained with Cruse Bereavement Care and worked for them as a volunteer counsellor for several years.

I have also done Brief Work training as I have many short-term clients from local companies.
