Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

I have worked as a psychotherapist for twenty five years, training initially in body and energy psychotherapy and later in other forms including Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) at Guy's Hospital. I am UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Registered and as a result of wide experience in private practice; setting up and running a counselling service for a local MIND; work with Employee Assistance Programmes with people sent from their work settings (e.g., traumatised by armed robberies and other critical incidents). I have a wide range of experience of many client groups and settings and issues. I have worked with some psychiatric issues and personality disorders, including borderline personality disorder and have extensive experience of working with people who have been sexually abused as children. This has given me an interest in dissociation, somatic symptoms, working with body processes and symptoms and in sexuality and sexual behaviour. Alongside this I have an interest in spirituality, mindfulness, and meditation and for the last ten years have run tantra workshops combining sexuality and spirituality with my wife.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

I use the relationship as the container for the work and the stronger this is the better. For some, the work on the relationship is the main work, for most it then allows work using bodywork, or techniques from Gestalt or energy psychology working on the way trauma is held in the body and the energy system as well as the resulting beliefs. Challenging beliefs is rarely enough, it needs techniques, such as AIT to resolve the trauma underpinning the beliefs.

Clinical Qualifications in Counselling and Psychotherapy

Three years at the Boyesen Centre in biodynamic psychotherapy. Training at the Minster Centre in integrative therapy. Training in Eriksonian psychotherapy, one year training in Integrative Psychotherapy at Metanoia. An MA in Integrative Psychotherapy by dissertation at East London University. Two years training in Cognitive Analytic Therapy at Guy's Hospital in London. Ongoing CPD and in the last year, training in Advanced Integrative Therapy with Asha Clinton.
