Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I am a Psychotherapist registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council and have been working in Private Practice since 1993. I offer either brief or longer term Counselling and Psychotherapy to individuals in my private practice in Childs Hill, near Golders Green, London.
I have worked for many years in the helping professions beginning in social services and moving on to run a Bereavement Service for a number of years. I have been employed as a therapist in an Eating Disorders Clinic and continue to work with a number of people with eating difficulties. I have worked for many years in GP surgeries seeing many patients for both short and longer term therapy and gaining much experience of working with a very wide variety of issues. I have also supervised and consulted for a number of different organisations in the NHS, private and charitable sectors. I currently supervise in an organisation that works with women's issues. In addition, supervising and teaching trainees is a way of ensuring that I refresh my knowledge and understanding.
In my experience people often come to therapy when they feel stuck, afraid, depressed or hurt about relationships that have gone wrong. They may be grappling with such feelings as anger, guilt, fear and jealousy and need to make sense of them. They may have lost direction and meaning and be afraid to live life to the full. During the course of therapy with me they have the opportunity to explore all these feelings and to learn new ways of dealing with difficulties.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
I have completed a training in Psychodynamic Counselling and a further in depth training in Psychotherapy from a Jungian perspective. I therefore pay attention to what may lie underneath the issues that someone brings. Repeating patterns from childhood may be blocking the possibility of further development and undermining confidence. The first session is an opportunity to explore the current difficulties and reasons for coming but also to begin to form an understanding of underlying issues. People can have an experience of me as a therapist and decide whether they would like to continue to work with me. We would discuss how often we might meet which would often be once a week but could be several times weekly.
As a therapist I listen carefully to the feelings that clients bring and offer my own understanding in an atmosphere of mutuality and respect. I also pay attention to the way the relationship develops between us as this provides helpful understanding and the possibility of changes in ways of relating. Exploring dreams and other unconscious material that emerge is also helpful. Gradually clients begin to understand themselves and their feelings more deeply so that they can gain relief from emotional pain and make better choices in their lives.
