Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I have been working in a variety of counselling settings over the past five years in Reading, Newbury and Slough. This has been a very rich experience, as I have met and worked with people from all walks of life and have been able to participate in the change and growth that many of them experience.
I have extensive experience in the charitable sector, assisting in the establishment of a counselling service dedicated to serving clients with alcohol and substance abuse issues. In this practice, I worked as a counsellor addressing both practical solutions and more in-depth personal change. In this service I also worked with group therapy.
In my private practice with individuals, the duration of counselling sessions is tailored to the needs of a client and determined by them. My work can then be short-term, solution focused, or open ended. Thus my clinical experience with individuals has varied from sessions ranging over three or four months to over two years.
My clinical experience has covered many of the issues that are highlighted above as 'problems I work with', however each person's individual story of their life and issues is unique, and thus considered and worked with appropriately.
My work in the NHS in another capacity augments my experience of working positively and professionally with my clients.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
My work is based on the Psychodynamic approach to counselling. In short, this method aims to allow 'what is unconscious to become conscious'; that what motivates, limits, perhaps frightens a person often comes from an unknown and unaccesible place (unconscious). By allowing these contents into consciousness perhaps they can become more manageable and proportionate and a client's freedom to choose and change more likely. This psychodynamic process is facilitated by the unique relationship between client and counsellor; a confidential, containing and illuminating experience. In practice this entails the client being free to bring whatever matters to them into this talking therapy, and invites the counsellor to companion them in their exploration.
My way of working is non-judgmental and I do not prescribe what clients should or should not do.
Clinical Qualifications in Counselling and Psychotherapy
My initial training in the field of counselling and psychotherapy was on a BACP recognised programme at the University of Reading; for this I was awarded the Post-Graduate Diploma. This programme emphasised theoretical and experiential learning and supervised work with counselling clients over a period of two years.
Good clinical training relies on a counsellor's commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD); the ongoing pursuit of knowledge and experience that can inform and enhance my service to clients.
I have completed certification courses on Assessment and Supervision Skills at the British Association of Psychotherapists (BAP) London, and attend CPD events at the Society of Analytical Psychology (SAP) London and Oxford. Additionally, I am a committee member of Reading Therapies Group which sponsors monthly CPD events.
My required professional supervision (fortnightly) provides valuable case-by-case insight and training.
