Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

Every day, everyday people experience genuine life concerns... There are times in most people's lives when they experience emotionally painful events or have unwanted feelings from which there seems no escape. Sometimes the cause is clear - a difficult relationship, a bereavement or an illness. Sometimes however, we feel our lives have become intolerable, we are repeating the same old difficulties time and time again or we just feel stuck. The cause of these feelings can seem to be inexplicable. My aim as a practitioner, psychotherapist and counsellor, is to help people to understand their anxieties. Through embarking on the process of therapy people can come to know and accept themselves and to find their own meanings and ways through their questions and difficulties Experienced Help... I am an experienced and highly qualified practitioner working in private practice in Clapham and Victoria and in the NHS. I also work as an Associate Lecturer and Clinical Supervisor at the University of Surrey training counselling psychologists. Following a long history of working in the private and public sectors, I have a particular interest in people struggling with anxieties, conflicts and concerns about complex behaviours and repeating patterns, while trying to maintain a stable work and family life.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

I offer a safe and convenient environment to engage in therapy. For many this will be their first time to visit a counsellor or psychotherapist and I suggest an initial session to ensure that we are both comfortable and willing to proceed. I encourage each person or couple to commit to six sessions initially to allow us to see how we get on and to highlight the work that needs to be done.

As a psychotherapist and counselling practitioner, I use an integrative approach that draws on analytic, humanistic, behavioural and existential theoretical models. I work psychodynamically (linking current conflicts with earlier experiences) and adapt my way of working to the individual client or couple, their presenting problems, their objectives and the prospective length of therapy.

The work that I facilitate ranges from short term psychotherapy and counselling focused on a specific problem to longer term or open ended therapy offering a deeper exploration. Knowing when to end is often a concern for clients but this is reviewed on a regular basis and is always open for discussion. My aim is to encourage independence, not dependency. Working towards an ending is a crucial part of the process of therapy.

Therapy is about forming a productive working relationship. Psychotherapy is a challenging process and it takes courage to come and seek help.
