Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I have worked as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist for nearly fifteen years in various settings. I have met clients from a wide variety of backgrounds, in private practice with individuals and couples, work and employment programmes in the City and Emergency Services, teenagers and children and people in rehabilitation following accidents.
For many years I worked within a large employee programme as a Case Manager, talking to counsellors about their work from all over the country. And this brought me into contact with Occupational Health Professionals and Doctors, HR Managers, Psychologists and so on. Much of this background deals with considering the overall needs of clients for referral on, securing other professional resources and making tentative diagnoses.
However I have always kept in touch with main stream counselling meeting clients with relationship difficulties, depression and anxiety.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
Most of my work is about using the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach at least initially to gain some improvements in clients situations. Some clients continue into more open ended sessions, if it suits them. Reviews are conducted around every five sessions or so.Since my training background includes two main trainings, that is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and a psychodynamic training, I believe I am able to move from the more practical (getting improvements in the short term ) to a broader less structured approach.
I work a good deal with trauma and difficult life events - trauma, abuse, bullying for example. The CBT trauma focused approach and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is pointed to by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). I use these approaches, fitting in with other sources of help as needed. Sometimes this will result in reports or referral letters to other professionals.
I increasingly meet other family members or partners as part of the progress of therapy where this is relevant. So many difficulties seem to need to be understood more widely and communicated about within families. With this approach important changes are possible in the short term.
