Clinical Experience in Counselling, Psychotherapy

I have counselled individuals, both young and old, male and female, from seventeen to seventy, from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. I have provided therapy both face-to-face and on the phone for a number of years and covering numerous issues. Clients have been employees in both the private and public sector, or in higher education, retired or unemployed, including the long-term unemployed. I have worked in hospitals, doctors' clinics, drop-in centres, counselling services, and corporate environments, as well as in private practice.

How I Work

Whatever your issues are, we work on them together in a safe, anxiety-free, impartial and confidential environment where you will feel able to speak freely about whatever comes up for you.

You are not a symptom, problem or issue - you are a whole human being, perfect as you are, with all the tools you need within you to fulfil your life - you just haven't discovered them yet, or maybe you have, but don't quite know how to use them yet!

Life is tough, but you can still learn to live and enjoy it - the way things are right now!

Changing the way you see those very things changes the way you relate and react to them, you can learn to break through your limitations and misconceptions, and learn to accept that the anxiety and confusion in your thinking are part of your life and that you can learn to cope and live with them.

You can neither live in the past nor the future - you can only live in the here-and-now.

We discuss whatever comes into the session - describing it, talking around it and going into more depth with it.

We explore what 'is', not necessarily what has been, should be or will be in the future.

It's All About Life Philosophy

This therapy is partly based on the belief that:

Human beings are alone in the world, and this aloneness leads to feelings of meaninglessness.

You can overcome these feelings by creating your own values and meanings.

You have the power to create them because you have the freedom to choose.

When you make your own choices you assume full responsibility for the results and blame no one else if the result is less than desired.

You advance along a path towards discovering why you are overburdened by the anxieties of aloneness and meaninglessness.

You start moving towards finding new and better ways to manage your anxieties.

By staying with you in each session, we encourage you to reflect on your aloneness and meaninglessness.

We help you find your own ways of coping with these anxieties and change what is meaninglessness into what is meaningful.

We help you discover where you are "stuck" and have been allowing others to make the important decisions which you alone should be making.

We make it easier for you to make healthier choices freely, in the present, rather than under the influence of your past conditioning.

Clinical Training in Counselling, Psychotherapy

My experience as a psychotherapist is extensive and diverse, and I have dealt with a great variety of personal issues. My approach is holistic and all-inclusive, focusing on the person rather than on any clinical or medical model, and placing prime importance on the healing power of the relationship between the client and the therapist.

I became a Buddhist in 1976 and chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, and I use Buddhist principles in my life, which then translates into therapy.

Additional Information from Brian Melichan

I started working life as a computer programmer and then worked in the wholesale precious metals trade, prior to studying for a master's degree in languages, followed by a postgraduate diploma in translation. I then worked as a translator, as well as with international sales and marketing, for the next twenty years. I then combined languages with I.T. in the software localization industry, working with databases and in business software support, before training to be a psychotherapist.
