Clinical Experience

I have specialist expertise in the mastery of obsessive thought-patterns and compulsive behaviours - sometimes referred to as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), and the self-esteem issues that arise as a result.

Having said that, with more than ten years' experience in general psychotherapy practice, I'm aware that self-defeating behaviours and self-limiting beliefs can take shape in many forms. Such beliefs and behaviours can colour our relationships with others, give cause to why we stay in certain careers, stunt the manner in which our lives have a sense of purpose and meaning, and cultivate uncomfortable feelings that pervade every hour of our day-to-day lives.

This can show itself in many ways, unconsciously or explicitly. Whether our struggle takes the form of overspending, so-called workoholism, a poor sense of 'identity', or the low-grade anxiety and unease that arises from an unhelpful way of experiencing the world around us, each of us can make sense of these emotions in a solution-focused manner.

Sometimes it's difficult to believe, but life is never about what is actually happening; it's about our how we INTERPRET what is happening - and our unconscious emotional responses to the interpretations we are forming and reinforcing on a daily basis.

Whatever your goals in relation to 'personal mastery', it's my experience that it is through the step-by-step process of thinking, then doing, then thinking, that the most powerful and long-lasting of life's transformations take place.

A fellow motivational speaker, author and 2003 Rugby World Cup Winner chose to put it this way, "Max Eames is most definitely the man to have on your side when you're determined to finish on top. By combining powerful strategies with proven techniques, Max motivates you to be the best you can be and won't let you settle for less than you deserve."

How I Work

The way I work is playful, humorous, collaborative... and even fun!

Cognitive-behavioural therapy, referred to as CBT by NHS doctors and primary-care trust practitioners, can help you confront and question your more unhelpful everyday moods, attitudes, interpretations and emotional responses.

Depression, anxiety, or a low-grade sense of unhappiness is often the result of unhelpful beliefs and behaviours, and CBT is well-placed to address these issues.

Solution-focused therapy holds at the forefront your desire to gain a sense of 'mastery' over your beliefs and behaviours, so a more happy and rounded perspective can arise. Thus, where appropriate, my facilitation occurs within a framework that is focused on clear and noticeable results for you.

My understanding and use of metaphor means that we work together toward a shared understanding of both the beliefs and behaviours you wish to change in order to gain a sense of freedom and mastery in your life.

This is underpinned by a practical though not over-structured process of reflection, experimentation, and further reflection. Thus I prefer to refer to cognitive-behavioural therapy as 'thinking-doing' therapy.

Over the years, I have developed a strong preference for telephone-based work. Whilst I am happy to meet face-to-face by arrangement, it is my own longstanding experience that telephone work, in accordance with the BACP Guidelines for Telephone Counselling and Psychotherapy, produces results that are powerful, targeted and long-lasting. My specialist training in telephone work can offer cost-effective non-geographic facilitation for persons anywhere in the UK.

I hold a Diploma in Therapeutic Hypnosis and Psychotherapy, and an Advanced Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling.
