Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

If you are troubled by issues relating to anxiety, panic, social phobias, obsessive thought-patterns and/or compulsive behaviours, you stand to benefit from my specialist expertise. With some fifteen years in psychotherapy practice, I've come to realise that self-defeating behaviours and self-limiting beliefs take shape within infinite forms of expression. It's an unfortunate fact that fear-based behaviours and beliefs can colour your relationships with others, give cause to why you might feel trapped in certain situations, friendships or careers - and ultimately pervade every hour of your day-to-day life. My interest in applied psychology extends back to the 1980s. Human factors psychology formed a core part of the curriculum of my initial degree studies. The study of human factors is research-based and survey-based, with an aim toward understanding the inescapable biases and limitations of human mental processes (and of our behaviours, the inevitable result of the quality of our thinking). Ultimately it considers our judgement under situations of uncertainty and our 'choice strategies' under conditions of moderate or severe distress. Given the military careers of my father and grandfather, my induction into self-evaluation rating tools such as aviation's Cooper-Harper Scales (1969) ignited a lifelong passion for the mindfulness concept of 'being an observer of yourself'. Practical self-monitoring techniques are, in my view, at the heart of any lasting personal transformation. Perhaps this is why my multi-method approach combines the very best of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) strategies to such good effect.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

A multi-method approach toward psychotherapy is ultimately a pluralistic one. It builds on the strengths of existing models of therapy while avoiding the tendency to 'box' you into any one methodology. My work is thus organised around a philosophical frame of reference (pluralism), rather than a particular psychological model. As a result, I am continuously engaged in the shape and development of trust between us, and in turn, within you. This means that my facilitation is broadly based on what I consider would be most helpful to you in confronting your fears and taking the next step, however small that step might be. Thus the structure, the focal point, of our work is the increasingly clear sense of what you want to achieve from it.

Over the last few decades, some practitioners have argued that a form of 'hyper-responsibility' (either in regard to oneself or toward others) lies at the heart of most anxiety-based or obsessional patterns of thinking. Whilst this is arguably true in some instances, such convenient simplicity doesn't satisfyingly explain the accompanying feelings of depression, despair, depersonalisation or derealisation. Indeed, the ways in which you might attempt to avert various forms of 'uncertainty' - and the ways in which you try in vain to control either your thoughts or your environment to that end - suggest that anxiety-based experiences have complex and varied origins.

With that in mind, you would be right in guessing that working with me entails a fair bit of ongoing and playful collaboration; both in terms of how we conceptualise our work together, and in terms of what we both agree is safe but sufficiently challenging.

Within this context, my work promotes the development of 'mindsight' - your forgotten ability to bring about the right sort of neural integration (where you literally 'retrain your brain'), a mindful presence (where regrets about the past and fears about the future are put into proper perspective), and deep transformation through focus on broadening the range of your 'choice-points' in relation to both thoughts and behaviours.

Additional Information

I grew up in California, but settled in the United Kingdom after completing an honours degree in Florence, Italy. My varied career has included work as a chartered architect and a restaurateur. A London-based psychotherapist, I facilitate long-lasting personal transformations for those who recognise the need to challenge both self-defeating behaviours and self-limiting beliefs.

Aside from working at present on a series of books for mastering anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, I have written on compulsive spending and getting out of debt. 'Under the Hood' is an invitation to harness the secret science of the Galatea Effect so it works for you, not against you. You can use this simple psychology to transform your bank balance, and then apply it to the rest of your life. Whether you want to make changes in relation to your job, your relationships, or your lifestyle, it will set the wheels in motion for lasting results.
