Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy

Welcome to my profile! I am Hansje te Velde, psychotherapist, counsellor, supervisor. I have been working in this field since 1991, when I qualified, helping people resolve conflict by exploring who they are and accepting more of themselves, working towards lasting changes. I work with your unique interests and concerns. You may be seeking therapy or counselling when you are uncertain of your direction and purpose in life, adjusting to economic changes, feeling isolated and unable to make meaningful relationships, affected in the present by past trauma, experiencing loss, making a big life transition, having difficulties in your current relationship, struggling with the effects of a health diagnosis, or feeling depressed. I am passionate about gestalt therapy, because gestalt therapy works with the whole person - feelings, body, intelligence, energy, emotions, imagination, creativity, spirituality, dreams - towards a more integrated self. Whilst using this holistic approach, I see people discover and develop a better sense of themselves with more awareness of options and choices in the way they live their lives. Gestalt therapy considers three manifestations: you, your environment or context and the relationship between them. So, you may feel that you are blocked in some aspect of yourself which is reflected in issues in your relationships to others and/or to yourself or with the world around you. In the sessions you and I explore together what is going on with you, at your pace, supporting you and bringing about greater awareness of what is happening. Together we work on resolving conflict and discovering more choices. Gestalt's methodology includes awareness and presence, dialogue, attention to possibilities, client therapist relationship, creative experimenting, here and now experience, dream work, transference and counter transference, projective identification. I am interested in working with individuals in longer term therapy. My experience is that through sustained exploration and support, lasting change can be achieved. Based on my experience, I believe that short term gestalt therapy over several weeks or a few months can also be very beneficial and can instigate significant changes. Are you interested? Then do contact me to speak directly. I am happy to tell you more or go into anything you are unsure about.

What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy

The first session is an introducion session where you and and I meet each other, talk together and look at continuing to work together. This session is non-obligatory, meaning that you have the choice to continue or not. This session is also the assessment session to establish that therapy or counselling is the best service for you at this particular time.

As you and I together explore the issues you bring to the sessions your awareness of what is going on with you is likely to increase.

An example of a session where my client and I explore. John (not real name) has brought his drawing book. He wants to show me what he has drawn because the drawings have in them what he tells me about himself and his life in the sessions, John says. I look at the first drawing John wants me to look at. As I am looking, he tells me about the hands in the drawing. I see two holding hands. I also see that John, in this moment, is holding his own two hands. I ask what his hands are doing. He and I fully explore the meaning of his holding hands and John gets in touch with being left.

In subsequent sessions John and I continue to explore and make room for John's strong feelings when a significant person in his life goes away. Together we have made connections between these feelings and often being left as a young child. This helps him to make sense of his feelings and develop insights and new ways of being in current relationships.

As the therapy progresses, John and I also explore what happens in the therapeutic relationship. That helps further with gaining insights and becoming aware of influences such as fears and hopes on present relationships.

Another example. Maria (not real name) feels dissatisfied in her relationship and at work, despite "having everything" - partner, children, good job, fine house. Through exploring together, it transpires that Maria could be experiencing issues now that are connected to her having been adopted as baby. I focus on "here and now" and on what happens moment by moment. Together, and at her pace, Maria and I work with her fears of abandonment and intimacy. I use gestalt methodology and cognitive behavioural approaches to explore together what is possible.

One more example. Sabine (not real name) has been coming for approximately twenty five sessions. She is worried about Katy (not real name), her 8 year old daughter, who expresses angry outbursts. I sense that Sabine is holding down her own anger and gently explore this possibility with her. Sabine is interested and through the gestalt dialogue method she accesses her anger and feels able to express what she feels. Afterwards she experiences a huge sense of relief. Several weeks later she tells me that her daughter has not had any more angry outbursts. Together Sabine and I establish the sensitivity of some children to their parents feelings and that Katy was expressing what Sabine was holding down.

Are you interested? Then do contact me, I am happy to tell you more or go into anything that you are unsure about.
