Clinical Experience in Counselling, Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy
I provide psychotherapy and counselling to people in Surrey. I have worked in the field for 13 years: within NHS settings as a primary care counsellor and in a hospital psychotherapy department; in private practice; in the charity sector. I have experience of providing time-limited therapy, and of working on an open-ended basis.
What to Expect during Counselling, Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy
My approach is psychodynamic - an awkward word which often puts people off. But don't be. Psychodynamic therapy offers a way of thinking about how different parts of our selves may be in conflict: these conflicting internal 'dynamics', of which we are often unaware, can sometimes lead to psychological distress and illness. The therapeutic process helps you to understand the meaning of feelings and behaviour, think about how you relate to yourself and others, and discover possibilities for change. Many difficulties, which may be rooted in early experiences, can remain unconscious, and are repeated throughout our lives, though we don't necessarily understand why, or recognise that this is happening. Psychodynamic therapies use such insights to help you gain greater self-awareness, address current problems and, ultimately, feel better about yourself.
The therapy session allows you to explore your concerns in a confidential relationship and understand what lies behind your difficulties. It is not always an easy process, and calls for commitment, often over over a period of time. But it is a powerful and effective way of taking care of your own wellbeing.
In a session you will be encouraged to share whatever is in your mind - thoughts, feelings, dreams and memories. Often early patterns of relating to others come to life in the therapeutic relationship, and can then be considered and understood in fresh ways.
Clinical Qualifications in Counselling, Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy
- UKCP Accredited Training Psychoanalytic Therapy - Guild of Psychotherapists (GUILD) London (UK) 2007
Additional Information
I offer an initial consultation to talk about what is bringing you to therapy, which might take place over more than one session. This is an opportunity for us both to think carefully about what is troubling you, and what you want from therapy.
Sessions may be on a once-weekly basis, or can be agreed for two or three sessions per week, if it seems that more intensive psychotherapy would be helpful.
If you have a question not answered on my web profile, please contact me via the green Contact Me button.
