Clinical Experience in Counselling and Psychotherapy
I provide face to face and telephone counselling for a range of conditions that adversely affect a person's health and well-being. I work from my consulting room at home or I can travel to the client's place of choice. I can usually make an appointment within two weeks.
I work with the clients' emotions, thoughts and behaviours, to help them find improvements in the way they feel and perform. I work with the most up-to-date psychological knowledge to relieve emotional distress and help the client move on a quickly as possible.
I find that most conditions are to do with stress, loss, or failure of some sort, with a resultant degree of anxiety, depression, fear or phobia, which can lead to other physical and emotional symptoms and conditions.
Although the past is always relevant to our present condition, I find I do not need to dwell endlessly on the negative details. It is important to understand the past in a psycholgical context simply enough to understand how changes and improvements can be made.
I hope clients will seek help sooner rather than later because it is so much easier to deal with the issues before they become too established in the clients' thought or behaviour patterns. Often this does not happen and clients allow themselves to become increasingly distressed until they eventually resort to medicated control. Medication may help alleviate symptoms, and in the short term this can be necessary, but in the longer term it is better to address the causes so that medication can be reduced, or avoided altogether.
I have a wide experience of life and since retirement from full time employment, I have been counselling for eight years. During that time I have seen 509 clients.
I work on weekdays from 9am to 7pm.
What to Expect during Counselling and Psychotherapy
I provide effective, brief, fast and practical help, based on the Human Givens approach to therapy. It is a client-centered, solution-focused approach, which combines the use and experience of proven techniques such as Cognitive, Cognitive Behavioural, and NLP with the most up-to-date psychological knowledge. The successful outcome of therapy depends to a large extent on the rapport established between the client and the therapist. It is essential that the client wants help to change, and is prepared to do something about it. It is equally essential that I establish the right level of trust and understanding with the client to help create the atmosphere in which change can be encouraged to happen. This starts from the first telephone conversation to discuss arrangements, throught to the first meeting, and then throughout the treatment.
The first meeting is about getting to know each other - I need to understand the client's history and the client needs to feel comfortable with me. This is through dialogue, and I will help the client to talk about the issues and the background. I will always leave enough time to give the client some immediate understanding of why (s)he feels the way (s)he does and why things are the way they are, and then some guidance about what can begin to be done about it, including techniques for reducing emotional arousal.
At the end of the first session the client will have worked out what his or her goals are, and how we might go about achieving them. There is then the option to stop or continue to book the next session.
The frequency of sessions is by mutual arrangement. Often the first few are at weekly intervals, extending as required, with an agreement to follow up (often by post) after one month and three months.
The Human Givens approach is based on the fundamental assertion that any of us are distressed when we are not getting our emotional needs met appropriately. These needs include security of various kinds, attention, love, connection, motivation, control, and the self-esteem which arises from competence and being stretched in our lives. Nature also gave us the resources to help us meet such needs including: memory, imagination, problem-solving abilities, self-awareness and a range of different thinking styles to use in various changing situations.
I help clients identify unmet needs by activating their own natural resources in new ways aimed at changing emotional responses and problem solving.
